Cubs Nab A's Ace Harden in Six-Player Deal
The Cubs acquired RHP Rich Harden from the Athletics in a six-player trade yesterday, a day after the rival Brewers landed LHP CC Sabathia.
The Cubs received Harden and RHP Chad Gaudin for RHP Sean Gallagher, OFs Matt Murton and Eric Patterson, and minor league C John Donaldson.
"We've been working on Mr. Harden for a few weeks now," Cubs GM Jim Hendry said.
Harden, scheduled to be a free agent after the 2009 season, is 5-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 13 starts this season. He's slated to make $4.75 million this season.
Harden missed a month earlier this season because of a right shoulder strain. It was his sixth trip to the disabled list in his six-year career.
The Cubs said they expected Harden to join the team today and hope to pitch him once before the all-star break.
· CHURCH HEADS BACK TO DL: Unable to fully recover from his second concussion this year, the Mets placed RF Ryan Church on the 15-day DL again before New York's game against the Giants.
LF Moises Alou is also missing from the Mets' depleted outfield.
Church is out with post-concussion syndrome, the Mets said. He hasn't played since leaving Saturday's game in Philadelphia with dizziness -- six days after he came off the DL. He missed most of June following a May 20 concussion, his second in less than three months.
Church, traded from the Nationals in the offseason, is batting .307 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI.
· BRAUN JOINS DERBY: Ryan Braun of the Brewers was added to the all-star home run derby, joining NL participants Lance Berkman (Astros), Dan Uggla (Marlins) and Chase Utley (Phillies).
