Rockville Accepting Zoning Comments

Rockville residents may submit written testimony on the city's proposed zoning ordinance through Wednesday under a deadline extension the City Council adopted last week.

The council held two public hearings in June to discuss proposed changes in the ordinance, which was last thoroughly revised in 1975 and regulates development on all Rockville properties. The ordinance addresses issues such as building height, residential structures, land use, and the size and scale of new developments.

City officials have been rewriting the ordinance since 2005 and finalized the draft ordinance May 21. The council plans to review public testimony and conduct additional work sessions this month before adopting a final ordinance in August.

Send comments to mayorcouncil@rockvillemd.gov or City Hall, 111 Maryland Ave., Rockville, Md. 20850.

Written testimony should be addressed to the mayor and council and must be received by Wednesday. For information and to see the draft, visit http://www.rockvillemd.gov/zoning.

Montgomery Aims to Reduce Energy Use

Montgomery County has joined two National Association of Counties competitions that aim to reduce energy and gasoline consumption.

The Drive $marter Challenge and the 2008 Change the World, Start With Energy Star campaigns began last week and will continue through Nov. 30.

In the driving challenge, county employees and residents compete with others nationwide for the most pledges to reduce individual vehicle miles traveled. Participants can win coupons and contests from Exxon Mobil and AutoZone. For information or to join, visit http://www.drivesmarterchallenge.org. The Web site includes resources on local gas prices, public transportation, biking, car sharing and carpooling.

The energy campaign encourages county residents to make energy-saving changes at home, such as switching to efficient lights and improving heating and cooling practices. Participants can receive discounts and prizes from Office Depot.
