PERSONNEL DEPT.
3B Ryan Zimmerman had a second consecutive day of batting practice yesterday. "I saw his batting practice [Tuesday], missed today's," General Manager Jim Bowden said. Manager Manny Acta "sent me an e-mail when it was done, and he said it was even better than [Tuesday]. So I think we all need to be optimistic at this point that there's a good chance he'll be able to come back some time after the all-star break. . . . He's not in pain. He's swinging the bat free and easy."

QUOTABLE
"You're not allowed to argue balks. It doesn't matter what you do. So what if I would have went ballistic? There would have been two out of the game -- he and I."
