Two alleged gang members have been indicted by a grand jury in Alexandria in the shooting death of a man in the Springfield area, in the second gang-related case from Fairfax County in 2007 to be handled by federal prosecutors.

Melvin Reyes, thought to be in his 20s and a member of the 18th Street Gang, was found dead in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 7200 block of Commerce Street, near Old Keene Mill Road, on May 5, 2007.

Police said the slaying was gang-related, one of three Hispanic gang killings in Fairfax last year. Police eventually turned to federal authorities for help in the case.

Oscar Omar Lobo-Lopez, 29, and Sergio Gerardo Amador, 28, both of Springfield were arrested in the case, the U.S. attorney's office said yesterday. The two men are thought to be members of Mara Salvatrucha, a rival Latino gang known as MS-13.

Both were charged with conspiracy to commit murder, murder in aid of racketeering and use of a gun during a violent crime. Prosecutors could pursue the death penalty against them.
