United's Rally Falls Short in Loss to Chivas
Both clubs threatened in rapid succession, but Devon McTavish collected a fortuitous bounce in the box and drove a 14-yard shot off the right post and Wells made a right-hand save on Santana's bid. Play continued at a feverish pace when the lights went out and left most of the field in shadow.
As game officials and organizers huddled near the sideline, players bode their time by stretching and knocking around the ball. The lighting system was reset and play was allowed to resume.
The delay "gave them a chance to recuperate," Soehn said. "I told the guys that in the second half, [Chivas] was going to lose their legs a bit, and I thought they did."
Pineda stretched the lead by placing a 25-yard free kick into the upper right side, just beyond Wells's reach. "He hit a pretty good ball over the wall and it dipped just under the crossbar," Wells said. "I got a fingertip to it . . . just a tiny bit, not enough to redirect it."
Emilio responded four minutes later by collecting Namoff's pass with his back to the goal, turning on two defenders and scoring from 10 yards.
On United's next foray, Emilio was tugged down in the box by José Antonio Olvera, but Michel rose to the occasion on the penalty kick.
"Against good teams, you are going to create opportunities and we have to finish them," Soehn said. "We were a little unlucky with the posts, and it is not too often a keeper is able to stop Jaime's PKs."
SuperLiga Notes: Houston beat Atlante, 4-0, last night in the other Group A opener. Tonight, Santos Laguna visits New England and defending champion Pachuca faces Chivas USA in Carson, Calif.
