Other controversies involving House Ways and Means Chairman Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y) over the past year :
· He pays below-market rents for four apartments in the Harlem building in which he lives. Rangel said there is nothing unfair or illegal about that but he will reevaluate his use of one apartment as an office.
· He leases a Cadillac for $777 a month at taxpayer expense. Rangel said he offers rides to constituents and wants them to think that their congressman is "somebody."
· He asked the Federal Election Commission for permission to use campaign money to pay for a $64,500 official portrait. A Rangel aide said such portraits are a committee tradition.
