CANOE: Gyorgy Kolonics, a gold medalist at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics, died in his canoe yesterday during a training session for the Beijing Games. He was 36. The Hungarian Olympic Committee said Kolonics, who competed in four Olympics, lost consciousness and died of apparent heart failure.

VOLLEYBALL: Reid Priddy of Richmond was among the 12 players named to the U.S. men's indoor team.

TRACK AND FIELD: Allodin Fothergill, a sophomore at Maryland Eastern Shore, will run in the 4x400-meter relay for his native Jamaica in Beijing. . . . A Greek sprinter accused of staging a motorcycle accident before the 2004 Athens Olympics to cover up her drug use has been included in Greece's provisional team list for Beijing. Katerina Thanou, 33, achieved an Olympic qualifying time in the 100 meters (11.39 seconds). She served a two-year drug ban and still faces criminal charges in Greece.

CYCLING: Taylor Phinney became a two-time junior world champion last weekend, winning the 3,000-meter individual pursuit in Cape Town, South Africa. He is the best hope for a medal among the U.S. men's track cyclists in Beijing, where he'll race in the 4,000-meter individual pursuit. . . . The U.S. women's team filled out its Olympic roster, adding Amber Neben and Christine Thorburn, who were named to the road team, and Mary McConneloug, who will compete in mountain biking.

MARATHON: World record holder Paula Radcliffe, 34, is in training and still hopes to overcome a stress fracture in her left thigh to compete in Beijing. Radcliffe's injury was diagnosed in May when she had an MRI exam for a hip problem.
