Two people were shot and killed late last night in separate attacks in Northwest and Northeast Washington, including a 47-year-old woman who was fatally wounded during what may have been an attempted carjacking, D.C. police said.
In the first incident, a group of six men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, approached a BMW 750i sedan in the 2400 block of 9th Street NW near Howard University at about 10:30 p.m. As the car's driver, a man in his 30s, attempted to drive away, the gunman fired several large-caliber rounds, authorities said.
One of the bullets struck a 47-year old passenger -- later identified as Barbara A. Carl of the 600 block of Poplar Drive in Falls Church -- on the right side of her torso. The driver drove Carl to Howard University Hospital, where she died about an hour later, police said. Just after midnight, in the Rosedale section of Northeast Washington, police found a 19-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds lying in the middle of the street in the 1500 block of F Street NE, said Assistant Chief Peter Newsham. Robert Mallory was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, officials said. Police said Mallory lived in the 1300 block of Talbert Street SE.
Several police officers were within a block of the attack on F Street during the time of the shooting, but they did not hear the gunshots, Newsham said.
He said one of the officers had just driven around the block minutes before the attack, but residents had to flag down officers moments after the shooting. "Several officers were within a block," Newsham said. "They got there before we were even called for service."
Early this morning, officials deployed police dogs in search of a suspect and a weapon, Newsham said, but police apprehended no suspects. The shooting in Rosedale was just blocks away from the location of a brazen gunfight in March, when a 7-year-old girl was shot in the arm. Police said they had made no arrests in the case as of this morning.
Anyone who has information on either shooting is asked to call the police at 202-727-9099 or 1-818-919-CRIM[E]. Anonymous information can also be sent to the department's text tip line by text messaging 50411. The police department offers a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a person or people responsible for any homicide committed in the District.
