Here are a few tactics that experts recommend to build healthier relationships and help avoid violence.

This Story

For parents:

· Keep the lines of communication open with children of all ages; try to avoid being overly judgmental, and listen.

· Model positive relationship behaviors in the home.

· Pay attention to changes in your child's personality or behavior when he or she is around a partner; sudden social withdrawal may be a sign of emotional, physical or sexual violence.

For students:

· Be aware that drugs and alcohol could increase the likelihood of violence.
