The Post quoted Eric Bunn, president of Local 2725 of the American Federation of Government Employees, as being "very concerned" about the firing of 18 housing inspectors ["District Fires 18 Housing Inspectors; Staffers Didn't Meet Certification Date," Metro, July 16].

Apparently these inspectors had a year in which to become certified by the International Code Council. Certification would have meant that they would have kept their jobs and possibly received raises.

Where was the union during that year, Mr. Bunn? Why wasn't the union helping its members achieve certification?

I am pro-union and have been all my life. I regret seeing American unions' membership slip away. I regret seeing unions' political and economic clout decline.

Unfortunately, many of the unions' problems are of their own making. When unions were strong they were proactive. Local 2725 is being purely reactive, and 18 of its members are suffering because of it.
