Arlington Transit officials said the bus service was continuing with little disruption today even though some drivers didn't show up for work in the midst of contract negotiations.
Officials said that only a "handful" of regular drivers didn't show this morning and that supervisors and other drivers took over some routes. All 20 peak-hour buses were in operation.
"For the most part, service was running on time," said Stephen del Giudice, Arlington transit bureau chief.
About 5,000 people a day ride ART buses, which supplement other transit systems. The drivers who didn't show up are members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
Union officials say the drivers are upset about working conditions, wages and the firing of a negotiator. The union is in contract talks with Veolia Transportation, the company Arlington contracts for the service.
