PERSONNEL DEPT.
Garrett Mock arrived in the Nationals' clubhouse with a new role (relief pitcher) and a mental checklist of how to handle the job. He would need to stay calm, so adrenaline couldn't sap him. He would need to warm up more quickly, and pitch without worrying about conserving himself for later innings. Though it cost him his customary life as a starter, Mock was thrilled about the promotion from Class AAA Columbus. "Playing in the big leagues, that's what I want," he said. "My role, that's for the guys up top to decide. If they want me to throw out of the bullpen, I'll throw out of the bullpen. If they want me to be a batboy, I'll be a batboy."
