PERSONNEL DEPT.

Ahead of schedule, OF Elijah Dukes began his rehab assignment yesterday with the Nationals' Gulf Coast League affiliate. According to assistant general manager Mike Rizzo, Dukes already feels capable, physically, of rejoining the Nationals. Dukes has been on the disabled list since injuring his right knee on July 5 against Cincinnati. Originally, the team had expected that Dukes would miss four to six weeks.

QUOTABLE

"I'm happy here. I'm not playing to get traded. I'm here to win, to get better. I'm not thinking about leaving. . . . For what? That just puts more pressure on me, and this game is hard enough."

on the possibility of being traded
