Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata was carted off the field yesterday with an injured right leg after getting caught in a pileup during a full-contact drill in Westminster, Md. Ngata was on the ground for several minutes before limping with assistance to the sideline, where he was then driven off the field.
"We don't think it's serious, but we've got to find out as we go," Ravens Coach John Harbaugh said.
Ngata's injury was the latest in a long list during Harbaugh's first week of training camp. Running back Willis McGahee didn't practice because of a lower left leg injury, and tackle Jared Gaither didn't practice after spraining his right ankle Saturday.
"He woke up and it was swollen," Harbaugh said of Gaither, who is vying to fill the void left by the retirement of Jonathan Ogden. "They're evaluating it still."
Cornerback Chris McAlister, who had offseason knee surgery, passed his physical and began practicing after being activated from the non-football injury list.
· EAGLES: Cornerback Asante Samuel is day-to-day with a mild hamstring strain. Samuel was hurt Saturday while working in seven-on-seven drills during the team's first practice in full pads this summer. He had an MRI exam on the injured right hamstring yesterday.
Samuel signed a six-year, $57 million contract with the Eagles after spending his first five seasons with New England.
Also, two-time Pro Bowl right guard Shawn Andrews remained a no-show at camp. Andrews's absence for "personal reasons" is not excused.
· BENGALS: Wide receiver Chad Johnson has reported to training camp as promised.
Johnson didn't answer questions as he carried his belongings into an apartment at the team's training complex in Georgetown, Ky. The Pro Bowl receiver tried to get the team to trade him in the offseason, but the Bengals refused. He dropped his threat to sit out the season and apologized to fans who were upset with his offseason comments.
· STEELERS: Pro Bowl nose tackle Casey Hampton was placed on the physically unable to perform list after reporting to training camp overweight and failing to complete the team's annual run test. . . . Rookie wide receiver Limas Sweed signed a four-year contract, the team's last draft pick to come to terms.
· SAINTS: Defensive tackle DeMario Pressley was placed on injured reserve with a foot fracture, forcing the fifth-round draft pick to miss his rookie season.
· BEARS: Kick returner Devin Hester signed a new four-year contract worth up to $40 million.
