A weekly playlist for the listener with a one-track mind.
Glen Campbell: "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" Ever wondered what might happen if Campbell covered the Foo Fighters, the Replacements (!) and several lesser Tom Petty tracks in a bid for Gen-Y cred? Us neither. But unlike many old-timers-gone-hipster, he actually seems to be enjoying himself on this downright perky version of Green Day's prom night classic.
Jazmine Sullivan: "Lions and Tigers" The latest amazing mess of a track from the 21-year-old R&B singer (and Missy Elliott protege) borrows its orchestration from Celine Dion, its phrasing from Broadway and its Philly-style soul from Lauryn Hill.
Young Chris featuring Wale: "Large" The woefully underrated rapper and sometime Young Gunz member teams with the suddenly everywhere Wale on this (possible) track from his long-promised, still-unscheduled solo debut.
Cold War Kids: "Something Is Not Right With Me" As you probably expected, the first track leaked from the Christian/Goth/indie rock/organic farming aficionados' September disc, "Loyalty to Loyalty," features lots of bass and yelling. Lots and lots of yelling.
The Avett Brothers: "Murder in the City" The country-folkies' new EP (from which this superlative track was lifted) will likely be the Brothers' last before becoming entombed in tastefulness by new producer/overlord Rick Rubin. From here on out, expect lots of sepulchral Nine Inch Nails covers and songs about hobos.
