EQUESTRIAN: Karen O'Connor of The Plains will replace Heidi White on the U.S. eventing team and compete in her fourth Olympics. White withdrew her mount Northern Spy for veterinary reasons. O'Connor won Olympic eventing team silver in 1996 and team bronze in 2000.
GYMNASTICS: The International Gymnastics Federation said yesterday it will not appeal Morgan Hamm's punishment by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic Committee already had said the warning did not affect Hamm's spot on the team. USADA announced July 3 that Hamm had been warned for a May 24 positive test for glucocorticosteroid, a cortisone-like anti-inflammatory. The drug is allowed if an athlete gets a therapeutic use exemption, but Hamm had failed to do that.
SOCCER: The U.S. women's team arrived in China on Thursday to begin preparations for its opening match against Norway on Aug. 6, but preparations included more than just training. Players traveled to Tiananmen Square on Friday and visited the Great Wall on Saturday before their first heavy-duty practice. On Sunday, the team traveled to the city of Qinhuangdao, the site of its opener.
TRACK: David Oliver (Howard University) led a U.S. sweep in the men's 110-meter hurdles at a meet yesterday in Monaco. Oliver, who will compete in Beijing, won in 13.11 seconds, just ahead of Anwar Moore and Jason Richardson.
SOFTBALL: The U.S. team ended its 60-game tour with a 59-1 record. Jessica Mendoza recorded a team-high 107 RBI, Crystl Bustos hit 28 home runs and Cat Osterman had a team-high 247 strikeouts with 37 hits.
