Sure, there are plenty of utilitarian reasons to don a pair of shades during the dog days of D.C.: UVA/UVB protection/cataract-and-crow's-feet prevention/glare blockage, blah, blah, blah. And of course, there's no better cure for a bad face day than a pair of Garboesque frames.

But a little frivolity is good for the sartorial soul. This season's frippery du jour: color. We're talking bright bolts of neon, pastels, Day-Glo white. Right now, bigger is generally better. (Like the Olsen twins, but minus the bag-lady affectations.) Christian Dior's squared-off orange whoppers do the trick, as do Ray-Ban's Wayfarers in a sweet, mauvey-pink. (Like pre-Scientology Tom Cruise in "Risky Business." If, that is, Joel Goodsen favored girly pink.) For those looking for a scaled-down look, in price as well as size, check out Nannini Solemio Kiss #2 violet shades for Target.

And unless you're a fashionista who's got an image to uphold -- runway lights are so blinding from the front row! -- please confine your shade-wearing to the great outdoors. The I-wear-my-sunglasses-at-night thing reached its expiration date about the same time that Corey Hart's career did.
