Most taxpayers do not need to take any extra steps to receive the stimulus payment. But there are some exceptions. Individuals who might not otherwise be required to file a 2007 tax return will need to file a return this year to receive the payment. The return must show at least $3,000 in qualifying income. So, low-income workers who had at least $3,000 in earned income in 2007 but do not otherwise earn enough to be required to file a federal tax return need to file a return to get the payment.

If you haven't yet filed a tax return to get your stimulus payment, it's not too late. You must file by Oct. 15 to get your payment this year.

According to the IRS, it will take eight to 12 weeks after you file your return to get your stimulus payment.

In most cases, payments will range from $300 to $600 for individuals and $600 to $1,200 for joint filers. Parents receive $300 for each qualifying child.

The IRS says it has issued stimulus payments, in both direct deposits and paper checks, for most returns filed by April 15. If it has been more than eight weeks since you filed your return or if you have questions about the status of your payment, visit the IRS Web site at http://www.irs.gov or call the IRS Rebate Hotline at 866-234-2942.
