Cubs closer Kerry Wood faced batters yesterday but probably will not return from a pesky blister on his right index finger until later this week.

Sidelined since July 11, Wood had hoped to return from the disabled list during Chicago's upcoming series against Houston. Instead, Manager Lou Piniella said he likely will not be activated until the Cubs host St. Louis this weekend.

Without the protective pad he had worn recently, Wood threw 30 pitches to hitters from the Wrigley Field mound after warming up and working in the bullpen.

· BRAVES: Broadcaster Skip Caray, the son of famous Cubs voice Harry Caray, has died in his sleep, according to the team. He was 68 years old.

The team says Skip Caray, who was in the middle of his 33rd season with the Braves, died in his Atlanta home yesterday. He had several ailments in the past year but had recovered enough to continue calling home games at Turner Field.

· METS: LHP Billy Wagner has a strained left forearm and will have his second MRI exam in two weeks tomorrow, and RHP John Maine was placed on the 15-day DL with a mild strain in his right rotator cuff, leaving New York without its closer and a key starter.

The Mets purchased RHP Eddie Kunz's contract from Class AA Binghamton, and Manager Jerry Manuel said he may close.

· CARDINALS: OF Rick Ankiel missed his eighth straight start with an abdominal strain, and wasn't sure when he'd be ready to return to the Cardinals' lineup.
