"You've got to go out there with a game plan about how you want to react to certain plays. That's what the preseason is for to me. You want to get a feel for everything and go out there and compete so when the season starts, you're able and you know what you want to do."

Safety Struggled to Adjust

Zorn and safeties coach Steve Jackson attributed the release of veteran safety Stuart Schweigert on Monday to his inability to adjust to Washington's system. Schweigert, a starter with Oakland, was asked to play free safety and struggled to adapt to the changes in technique.

"We give our safeties here a lot more freedom, in Oakland it's more restricted and confined," Jackson said. "Our system is, you've got the green light to go make plays. His was, 'I have to back-pedal like this, I have to move like this, I have to stay right here.' "

The Redskins re-signed Patrick Ghee to replace Schweigert; Ghee was released in June when Schweigert was signed as a free agent.

One-Liners

Rookie Durant Brooks handled all the punts Sunday night against the Colts, but incumbent Derrick Frost will take all the punts Saturday against Buffalo, Zorn said. The punters may split halves of games over the final three preseason games before one gets the job. . . .

Rookie quarterback Colt Brennan was limited in his work yesterday after suffering a bruise on his backside, but he will be back soon, Zorn said. . . .

Zorn said he could envision running back Marcus Mason (Georgetown Prep), who shone Sunday after spending 2007 on the practice squad, making the final roster. . . .

Defensive end Anthony Montgomery and linebacker Rian Wallace were back at practice after each broke a bone in his hand 10 days ago and could play Saturday, Zorn said. . . .

Defensive end Chris Wilson, wide receiver Anthony Mix and tailback Ladell Betts all returned from nagging injuries yesterday. . . .

The Redskins have two-a-days scheduled through tomorrow, and will not practice Friday ahead of Saturday's game.
