"Is He Dead?" (Feb. 11-March 8, 2009), Mark Twain's recently discovered 1897 spoof about how much better it is to be a dead artist if you want to sell your work, has been adapted by David Ives. (It was performed last winter on Broadway.) Halo Wines will direct.
"King of the Jews" (March 18-April 19), adapted by Leslie Epstein from his book about the Judenrat, the Jewish officials forced to carry out Nazi orders, unfolds in the Warsaw Ghetto. Olney Artistic Director Jim Petosa oversaw a professional workshop staging at Boston University, where he runs the theater program. "It was extraordinarily powerful," he says. A director has not yet been signed to this world premiere.
A movement-based musical adaptation of Jack London's "Call of the Wild" (April 8-May 3) and other writings, with book and lyrics by Jon Lipsky and music by Bill Barclay, has also been developed under Petosa's gaze. Olney's young professional touring arm, the National Players, traveled with an early version. The animal characters will be played by actors in ordinary dress. Clay Hopper will direct this world premiere.
George Bernard Shaw's1935 comedy "The Millionairess" (June 10-June 28) is about the wealthiest woman in the world and her search for a suitable mate. John Going will direct.
Petosa will stage Tennessee Williams's "The Glass Menagerie" (June 24-July 26) in the intimate Mulitz-Gudelsky Theatre Lab to bring the delicacy of the piece to the fore.
"Waste" (Aug. 5-Aug. 30, 2009), a 1907 drama by British writer Harley Granville-Barker ("The Voysey Inheritance"), is about the downfall of a star politician following a personal indiscretion. "It's a terrific Washington story," says Petosa, who will direct.
Emlyn Williams's 1935 "Night Must Fall" (Sept. 23-Oct. 18, 2009), which Petosa calls the "granddaddy" of psychological thrillers, will be staged by Going.
Lerner and Loewe's Arthurian musical "Camelot" (Nov. 18, 2009-Jan. 3, 2010) will be directed by Stephen Nachamie, who guided Olney's popular staging of "1776" this year.
