Braves: Activated 3B Chipper Jones from the 15-day disabled list and optioned LHP Chuck James to Class AAA Richmond. Jones missed 14 games with a strained left hamstring.

Diamondbacks: RF Justin Upton, out since July 9 with a strained left oblique muscle, could begin a minor league rehab assignment as early as Monday, Manager Bob Melvin said.

Phillies: Optioned LHP J.A. Happ to Class AAA Lehigh Valley to make room for LHP Scott Eyre, who was acquired from the Cubs on Thursday for minor league RHP Brian Schlitter.

Reds: Hired former Mariners and Angels GM Bill Bavasi as a special assistant. Bavasi, 50, was vice president and general manager for the Angels from 1994 to '99 and executive vice president and general manager of baseball operations for the Mariners from 2003 through June 15, when he was fired.
