A Look Ahead
Four years ago in Athens, Michael Phelps's quest for a record-tying seven gold medals was squelched in part because Ian Crocker swam a poor opening leg of the 4x100-meter freestyle relay, relegating the United States to bronze. This time, Crocker didn't qualify for the freestyle relay, but the Americans face stiff competition from the French, led by 100 freestyle world record holder Alain Bernard.

One of the featured rivalries of the Olympics was supposed to be the United States' Brendan Hansen against Japan's Kosuke Kitajima in the breaststroke events. But after Hansen's spectacular collapse at U.S. trials in the 200 breast, he has but one individual event, the 100. Though Kitajima beat Hansen for gold in Athens, Hansen has the four fastest times in the event's history, including the second-fastest ever at U.S. trials.
