Experience: After graduating from law school in 1987, she clerked for D.C. Superior Court Judge Herbert B. Dixon Jr. A year later, she joined the District's Public Defender Service as a staff attorney handling felony, juvenile and homicide cases. In 1994, she became deputy director of the District's Public Defender Service. President Bill Clinton appointed her to the bench in 1997. In 2000, she was named deputy presiding judge of the court's family division. In 2005, she became presiding judge of the family court, which oversees adoptions and domestic relations as well as cases dealing with juveniles, neglect and abuse. She also oversees the court's marriage bureau and cases involving mental health, paternity and child support.
