The Diamondbacks acquired slugging OF Adam Dunn from the Reds yesterday for a minor league pitcher and two players to be named.
The 28-year-old Dunn was batting .233 this season for Cincinnati with 32 homers, tied for tops in the majors.
"It was one of those pleasant surprises," the slugger said on a conference call. "To come off the terrible month that we had in Cincinnati, and you get a phone call today saying you're being traded to a first-place team. As a player that's all you could ask for."
The trade gives Arizona a boost to an anemic offense. The Diamondbacks rank 20th in the majors in runs scored.
· LONGORIA TO DL: The Rays placed rookie all-star 3B Evan Longoria on the 15-day disabled list because of a right wrist fracture.
The move was retroactive to Friday.
The team recalled OF Justin Ruggiano from Class AAA Durham to take his place.
Longoria was injured on Thursday when he was hit by a pitch from Mariners closer J.J. Putz. The 22-year-old has missed the past three games.
Longoria is hitting .278 and leads the Rays with 22 home runs and 71 RBI. His 22 homers rank sixth overall in the American League, first among rookies.
· CHAMBERLAIN BEGINS REHAB: Yankees RHP Joba Chamberlain is scheduled to start a throwing program tomorrow as part of his rehab for his injured shoulder.
Chamberlain was placed on the 15-day disabled list last Wednesday because of rotator cuff tendinitis in his pitching shoulder.
The 22-year-old was removed from his start Aug. 4 against the Rangers in the fifth inning with stiffness in his shoulder. He expects to rejoin the Yankees' rotation before the end of the month.
Also, DH-LF Hideki Matsui ran the bases for the first time since being sidelined in late June by a left knee injury. He could start playing in minor league rehab games soon.
· CAREY REMEMBERED: Skip Caray, the voice of the Braves for more than three decades, was remembered at a memorial service for simple contributions like cracking jokes to players in the clubhouse and his cries of "Braves win!" during the 1995 World Series. Caray, who came from a dynasty of baseball commentators -- including his father, Hall of Famer Harry Caray-- died Aug. 3 at his home.
· SUSPENDED: Padres bench coach Craig Colbert was suspended one game for a dispute with umpires last week.
Colbert will serve the penalty tonight when the Padres play the Brewers. He was also fined an undisclosed amount by MLB disciplinarian Bob Watson.
· SUSPENDED FOR DRUGS: Three Reds minor leaguers were suspended 50 games each after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
All three players were part of the Reds' Dominican summer league teams. Pitchers Jonathan Correa and Elvin Silvestre were penalized for using boldenone and Cesar Colmenares tested positive for nandrolone.
