Montgomery County police charged a soccer camp coach with sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl and said yesterday that they want to hear from anyone with information about the suspect during the approximately 10 years he has run the camp.

Juan J. Aranguri, 46, of the 5700 block of Luxemburg Street in Rockville was arrested Monday, police said. He remained at the Montgomery County jail yesterday on a $50,000 bond, according to court records.

Aranguri runs the South America Soccer Academy, which holds practices on the grounds of Bretton Woods Recreation Center on River Road in Germantown, police said. He describes himself on his camp Web site as a former professional soccer player.

On July 9, the 12-year-old developed leg cramps, police said. Aranguri offered to massage her legs, according to an affidavit signed by Montgomery Detective Frank Darley. Aranguri then massaged her in a way that spurred the 12-year-old to repeatedly try to remove his hand, Darley's affidavit stated. Eventually, another child approached, and Aranguri walked away from the girl, according to Darley.

Five days later, Darley interviewed the child. The girl then called Aranguri, who told her "he would not have sexual contact with [her] if she returned to the soccer camp," according to Darley's affidavit.

Aranguri was charged with sexual abuse of a minor and two counts of third-degree sexual offense, police said.

Aki Heydarian, general manager at Bretton Woods, said Aranguri was not on its payroll. "Except for the rental of the soccer field, we're in no way or shape affiliated with this gentleman," Heydarian said. He said Aranguri "came across as a nice, quiet guy."

Efforts to reach Aranguri yesterday were not successful.

Police ask anyone with information to call Darley in the Family Crimes Division at 240-773-5431. "It is very rare for an individual to engage in this type of inappropriate behavior only one time," said Lucille Baur, a Montgomery police spokeswoman.
