Chicago Archdiocese Agrees To Settle 16 Clergy Abuse Suits

CHICAGO -- The Archdiocese of Chicago said it has agreed to pay more than $12.6 million to settle lawsuits by 16 people who accused priests of sexual abuse, and it made public a candid deposition in the case by Cardinal Francis George.

Fourteen cases involve sexual abuse by 10 priests, and two relate to the Rev. Daniel J. McCormack, who pleaded guilty last year to charges of abusing five children.

The archdiocese has now paid $65 million to settle approximately 250 claims during the past 30 years, said its chancellor, Jimmy Lago.

Navy Commander Is Relieved of Duty

SAN DIEGO -- Cmdr. Shawn Bentley, the commander of a Navy air reconnaissance squadron that provides the president and the defense secretary the airborne ability to command the nation's nuclear weapons, has been relieved of duty by the Navy for loss of confidence in his ability to command, only three months after taking the job. Charlie Brown, a spokesman for the Naval Air Forces, said Bentley was removed after an investigation by the Navy's inspector general.

Former Student Pleads Guilty in Crowd Crash

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -- A former student accused of plowing his sport-utility vehicle into a campus crowd, hitting nine people, in a self-professed bid to avenge Muslim deaths overseas pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted murder. Mohammed Taheri-Azar, 25, was charged with nine counts of attempted murder and nine counts of felonious assault in connection with the March 3, 2006, attack at a popular outdoor gathering spot at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Taheri-Azar faces up to 40 years in prison for each count when he is sentenced Aug. 26.

Man Charged With Holding Family Captive

LAVONIA, Ga. -- A northeast Georgia man has been charged with holding his wife and four children captive for three years inside their mobile home. Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle said Raymond Daniel Thurmond, 36, was arrested when he showed up for work. He has been charged with rape, child abuse and false imprisonment. Carlisle said the family was discovered when the woman was finally able to leave the house and call for help.
