KING MEMORIAL

Work Begins, and $4 Million Is Given

The foundation building Washington's Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial said this week that work has started at the project site on the Tidal Basin and that the foundation has received $4 million more in donations.

The project also said the fundraising goal is being increased from $100 million to $120 million because of rising security, design and construction costs. The foundation has raised $98.8 million.

Project officials said the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has given $3 million, and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has given $1 million. The memorial is scheduled to be completed by 2010.
