"The first half was disappointing," Soehn said. "We addressed a lot of things and I thought the second half we started to do the things that we wanted to do right from the get-go."
Three minutes after the break, Jaime Moreno dropped a perfectly weighted pass over the backline. Quaranta made an unimpeded run, met the ball just inside the penalty area and one-timed a left-footed shot over charging goalie Doug Warren.
"I've been playing with Jaime for a little bit now," Quaranta said of his longtime teammate, "and I understand the sky is the limit when he has the ball."
New England's comeback hopes dimmed significantly in the 71st minute when Wells Thompson was sent off for a second yellow card, this one for hacking down Moreno at midfield.
United was not out of danger and needed another goal to ease the tension. It finally got it in the 81st minute when Iván Guerrero collected Moreno's pass in stride on the left flank and broke from a defender before crossing to Emilio. The first instinct of most players in that position is to shoot immediately, but with a defender in the way, Emilio deftly pushed the ball to his left to create space and then slotted a low drive through a collection of players.
"We had to concentrate on this game because we didn't want a surprise," Emilio said. "It is important to us because we need a championship and it is motivation for the rest of the season in MLS."
United Notes: Defender Gonzalo Peralta, fully recovered from a sports hernia injury, was in the starting lineup for the first time since June 29. . . . Defender Marc Burch served a one-game suspension for receiving a red card in the quarterfinal victory over Chicago.
