COLLEGES
VCU President to Resign for Health Reasons
Virginia Commonwealth University President Eugene P. Trani said yesterday he will resign his position in June, a year earlier than planned, because of recent heart surgery.
Trani, who had quintuple heart bypass surgery last month, said his decision was based on medical advice. The decision was not related to a string of controversies on campus, he said, including the improper awarding of a bachelor's degree to Richmond's former police chief and the university's acceptance of research contracts from the tobacco company Philip Morris USA.
Trani has been president of Virginia's largest public university for 19 years.
