Algae Blooms Reported In Charles County Waters
The Charles County Department of Health has announced that concentrations of a blue-green algae called microcystis have been found in Mattawoman Creek and the Potomac River.
Such algae blooms can occur in nutrient-rich environments and have the potential to be harmful in high concentrations or if they produce toxins, health officials said.
When bathers see bright-green water, sometimes with a surface scum that resembles green paint, they should not swim in the area or drink the water. Pets and livestock should also be kept away from it, officials said.
