In March, Portis received a $9.3 million signing bonus and was guaranteed at least $15.7 million through 2010 as part of a restructuring that helped the Redskins get under the NFL salary cap. Zorn was pleased with Portis's commitment to the offseason conditioning program and his approach in camp, and Portis still is the team's No.1 running back.
But there is room in the backfield for Betts, too, Smith said.
"I remember when I was with Tennessee and we'd face Jacksonville in the AFC South, they had Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor and they were a one-two punch," Smith said. "I would like to see us do it like that, do it that way, as long as we win. But both guys have to be unselfish. Clinton has to be unselfish. You have to say, 'This is about the team.' That's it."
WR Thomas Gets in Game
In his first pro game, top pick Devin Thomas was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct while on kickoff coverage. Thomas, sidelined for most of the preseason because of a hamstring injury, said he did not know he had to come directly back on to the field after riding a player out of bounds.
"That's a mistake I'll learn from," Thomas said.
Thomas played wide receiver with the first-team offense for a few plays, including one when Zorn went to a four-receiver set.
"Being with the first-team offense and going against the first-team defense felt really good," Thomas said. "I wish I could have made a couple of more plays, but it went pretty good for my first game."
Waiting for Landry's Debut
Free safety LaRon Landry (hamstring) was among the injured players who did not accompany the team on the trip. Landry has not played in the preseason and there are two games remaining before the Redskins and New York Giants kick off the season Sept. 4.
"Just for the good of the team, you'd like to have him out there," strong safety Reed Doughty said. "He's obviously the best safety we have. He's very talented. It would be nice, mostly for him, to just have his confidence going into the season.
"He's very confident, he knows what he can do, but just knowing he was ready and getting the rust off would be good. I would love if it he could get out here for at least a preseason game."
The Redskins hope Landry will play Aug. 23 at Carolina or in their last preseason game, Aug. 28 against Jacksonville.
Bugel Remains in Phoenix
Offensive line coach Joe Bugel remains with his family and his daughter, Holly, who is battling cancer. Snyder arranged for Bugel to take his private plane to Phoenix after last week's victory over Buffalo. . . .
