Virginia Tech wide receiver Zach Luckett has been suspended indefinitely, Virginia Tech Coach Frank Beamer announced in a statement yesterday.
Virginia Tech had no further comment on what was termed "a violation of team policy," but Luckett was arrested and charged with driving under the influence early Sunday morning, according to Sgt. Nathan O'Dell of the Blacksburg, Va., police. It was Luckett's second offense in five years, and he was driving on a revoked license because of the previous DUI.
At 1:02 a.m. Sunday, Luckett was stopped for a traffic violation after the arresting officer witnessed Luckett backing his white Mercury Mountaineer SUV into a dumpster. He pulled out without stopping to see if there was any damage and was subsequently arrested.
Luckett's blood alcohol content was .16, twice Virginia's legal limit. He was held on $2,500 unsecured bond and was released later Sunday. The incident occurred one block west of Virginia Tech's campus.
Luckett, 20, is entering his sophomore season with the Hokies and was expected to be Virginia Tech's starting flanker. The native of Mays Landing, N.J., played in all 14 games last season and caught two passes for 18 yards.
Junior Ike Whitaker is now the only Hokies wide receiver with any college receptions.
