Rockville Seeks Mandatory Recycling
Rockville officials plan to make Montgomery County's multifamily and commercial recycling program mandatory for apartment residents and businesses, the City Council announced this month. The program would require all commercial enterprises and managers of apartment and condominium buildings with seven or more units to arrange for the collection and pickup of all recyclable materials.
The public comment period on the proposal ends 5 p.m. Aug. 29. Comments may be sent by mail to the Public Works Department, Environmental Management Division, Rockville City Hall, 111 Maryland Ave.; by phone at 240-314-8871; or by e-mail to environment@rockvillemd.gov
The council will consider the proposal Sept. 8.
County Trash Pickups Will Change for Labor Day
County residents can expect changes in trash and recycling pickups Labor Day, Sept. 1.
Most residents whose trash is picked up Mondays will receive service Sept. 2. Collections will also shift a day for Tuesday through Friday pickups.
Schedules might vary by municipality. For example, Gaithersburg residents whose regular recycling day is Monday will have collection on the preceding Saturday, Aug. 30.

Golf Event in Germantown To Benefit Dystonia Effort
Registration is open for the second annual Dystonia Golf Classic, a day-long event featuring a scramble golf tournament, prizes, a banquet and music. The Sept. 15 event will benefit the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, which works to find a cure for dystonia, a neurological movement disorder that affects about 300,000 people in North America.
Registration starts at 9 a.m. the day of the tournament, and play will begin at 11 a.m. A reception will follow at 4 p.m., with an open bar and silent auction, and an awards banquet will be held at 6 p.m., with a live auction and Irish music by the McTeggarts.
The event will be at the Bretton Woods Recreation Center, 15700 River Rd., Germantown. Full registration is $195; team of four, $650. Registration for reception and banquet only, $75.
