A woman was killed in Prince George's County yesterday when her pickup struck another vehicle and a concrete barrier just south of the Capital Beltway on Branch Avenue, a key commuter road, authorities said.
Maryland State Police said Cindy Cynthia Bell, 44, of Clinton was northbound on Branch Avenue when her Chrysler truck rear-ended a Mazda car, hit the barrier and flipped upside down. Bell was partially ejected and was pronounced dead at Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton, authorities said.
The driver of the Mazda was not injured. Neither vehicle was carrying passengers.
The 9 a.m. crash, at the intersection of Allentown Road just outside the gates of Andrews Air Force Base, caused a backup on Branch Avenue, a major commuter route for Southern Maryland residents who work in Washington. By 10 a.m., traffic was at a standstill for more than three miles, past Surratts Road.
Northbound cars were able to use one lane as the investigation continued, said Sgt. John Green. The Branch Avenue offramp at Allentown Road remained closed at midmorning, and southbound traffic slowed as drivers looked at the overturned pickup.
