Church Finally Retuns to Mets' Lineup
Ryan Church looked at the Mets' lineup for a second time, not because he found it hard to trust his eyes, he was just glad to be back.
Activated from the 15-day disabled list and playing right field for the opener of a four-game set against the Astros last night, Church was bouncing around a clubhouse he mostly avoided for the past couple of months while going through a frustrating recovery from post-concussion syndrome.
"I'm really excited to get back in here. We're in a playoff race," Church said. "Hopefully, I can contribute, help out, do whatever it takes. I feel great."
Church, who batted seventh and went 1 for 3 with an infield single, last played on July 5 -- six days after he came off the DL for the first time because of a concussion.
· PODSEDNIK BACK: The Rockies activated OF Scott Podsednik from the 15-day DL and optioned C Adam Melhuse to Class AAA Colorado Springs.
Podsednik missed 23 games after being placed on the DL with a fractured left pinkie finger on July 28.
· BRAUN RETURNS: Brewers all-star Ryan Braun returned to the starting lineup last night against the Pirates as he continues to deal with a nagging, tight back.
While the team said the back problems haven't been severe enough to put Braun on the 15-day disabled list, the left fielder didn't start nine of the previous 11 games.
· CARPENTER WORKING: RHP Chris Carpenter increased the effort in his second bullpen session yesterday, but the 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner may not return before Sept. 1 when rosters can be expanded.
