Dallas-born Fulham defender Brede Hangeland inflicted a surprising 1-0 loss on Premier League title hopeful Arsenal yesterday in London, and Steven Gerrard executed a winner deep into injury time to complete Liverpool's 2-1 comeback win over Middlesbrough.

Hangeland, who captains Norway, slid forward to poke Jimmy Bullard's low cross over the line in the 21st minute.

In other second-round matches, Premier League newcomers Stoke beat Aston Villa, 3-2; Sunderland won, 2-1, at Tottenham; Everton overcame West Brom, 2-1; Newcastle defeated Bolton, 1-0; and Hull tied Blackburn, 1-1.

Liverpool trailed in the 70th minute after a long-range goal by Middlesbrough striker Mido, but equalized with five minutes remaining when Jamie Carragher's shot went in off defender Emanuel Pogatetz.

Gerrard made it two straight wins for Liverpool in the fourth minute of injury time.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored and had two assists for Columbus in the Crew's 3-0 win over visiting Real Salt Lake (7-8-6). Defender Chad Marshall and midfielder Brad Evans also scored for the Crew (11-6-4). . . .

Chad Barrett scored a goal and host Toronto FC (7-9-5) earned a 1-1 tie against New England (11-6-4). . . .

Jimmy Conrad scored out of a loose-ball scramble in second-half stoppage time, giving host Kansas City (6-7-8) a 1-1 tie with FC Dallas (6-7-8). . . .

In Carson, Calif., Chivas USA and the San Jose Earthquakes played to a scoreless tie that featured more fouls (31) than total shots on goal (25).
