Five years ago, Mike Hinckley, a left-handed pitcher, was one of the organization's top prospects. He had a fastball in the low 90s and a dominant record in the low minors. Then he struggled, finishing 2006 (in Class A) and 2007 (in Class AA) with ERAs above 5.50. Now a reliever with Class AAA Columbus, he has a 2.95 ERA and could be a September call-up. "Since we've been here the last four years, he had no velocity, never got it to 90," GM Jim Bowden said. "And now he's consistently back there."

QUOTABLE

"When a pitcher has his stuff going, and obviously has stuff like [Rich] Harden or [CC] Sabathia has, as a hitter it's tough. You just have to hope your pitcher kind of matches them."
