PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Aug. 25 -- Tropical Storm Gustav formed quickly Monday in the Caribbean and took a course that would send it into Haiti's denuded southern coast as a hurricane before moving on to Cuba, the Bahamas and Florida.

Haiti upgraded storm warnings to hurricane warnings along much of its coast and warned citizens to prepare for evacuations as Gustav closed in.

Forecasts suggested the eye could pass close to the capital, Port-au-Prince, home to nearly 3 million people. Early Monday evening, the storm was centered about 180 miles southeast of Port-au-Prince.
