Local high school football players will have at least one more chance to play in a postseason all-star game this year, with a second game possibly to be held the same day.
The Maryland Crab Bowl will be held Dec. 20 at Towson and will match teams of players from schools in Maryland. The Washington area team, to be coached by Quince Orchard's Dave Mencarini, will consist of players from Montgomery and Prince George's counties and the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference. Players from the rest of the state will play on a Baltimore team.
Crab Bowl organizer Sean O'Connor, who is the baseball coach at DeMatha, said that River Hill All-Met defensive back Michael Campanaro is among the players committed to the game.
In the planning stages is an all-star game that would be held in conjunction with the inaugural Congressional Bowl college football game, also on Dec. 20. Marie Rudolph, principal of the Washington D.C. Bowl Committee, said her organization is in discussions with a nonprofit group about creating a high school game to go along with the Congressional Bowl. Rudolph declined to provide specific details about a potential game, including a venue.
"The Congressional Bowl is our first priority," said Rudolph, adding that more details will be announced soon. "But these discussions are ongoing and if it is something we are able to do, we are very interested."
