BALTIMORE, Aug. 25 -- Daniel Cabrera declined to speak about an injury he may or may not have. That is the only thing certain with the Baltimore Orioles pitcher.
Cabrera has not discussed his status with reporters and did not update Manager Dave Trembley after Sunday's game against the New York Yankees. As a result, Cabrera was evaluated Monday by team orthopedist John Wilckens. Trembley said Wilckens told him he didn't think anything was wrong with Cabrera, but Cabrera will have a precautionary MRI exam on his elbow Tuesday.
The evaluation comes one day after a shaky performance sparked the intrigue surrounding Cabrera's health. He lasted 3 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits on Sunday, while his fastball slowed to 88 mph. When questioned about his health after the game, Cabrera gave an evasive answer, fueling speculation about his status and adding concern for a Baltimore club already thin on pitching depth.
Before Monday's game, Trembley said: "I think the guy basically -- I'm not trying to diminish if there's something wrong with his arm -- but I think the guy is disappointed. He's upset with himself."
Cabrera (8-8, 5.24 ERA) has had problems with consistency and control this year. He has not made it past the fifth inning in either of his past two appearances.
This isn't the first time Trembley has dealt with a player withholding injury information. Earlier this summer Adam Loewen masked the elbow pain that eventually ended his pitching career. It's too early to tell where Cabrera's situation stands -- mostly because he has not provided any clarity -- but Trembley is again faced with having to root out answers from a player reluctant to give them.
"I think the course of action that guys ought to take all the time is just be up front. Just say it," Trembley said. "If you're hurt and you can't pitch or you can't play, just let me know."
