2006 Napa Wine Co. Sauvignon Blanc ($16): pale, bright, some grass on the nose, balanced, with full flavor and a crisp finish. 14.4 percent alcohol.

2007 Frog's Leap Sauvignon Blanc ($18): greenish gold; hints of grapefruit and minerals; good balance; clean, crisp finish. 13.1 percent alcohol.

2006 Grgich Hills Dry Fume Blanc ($25): an entirely different style of sauvignon blanc, deeply gold, with a bright, grassy nose and a touch of oak; big-bodied. 14.2 percent alcohol.

2005 Robert Sinskey Vineyards Las Carneros Pinot Noir ($38): from five different vineyards, bright, earthy, complex (cranberry, cedar) and well balanced; memorable finish. 13.9 percent alcohol.

2005 Volker Eisele Family Estate Terzetto ($75): equal parts cab, merlot and cabernet franc redolent of raspberries and strawberries; great balance; long finish. 14.1 percent alcohol.

2005 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($130): full, ripe nose but not overpowering; cherries and hints of chocolate and cedar; well balanced with a powerful finish. 14.1 percent alcohol.
