THE BIG GAME
Oct. 4 at Virginia
Leave aside the fact that a solid rivalry exists between the schools. This has all the trappings of a bellwether game for Maryland. It comes one week after arguably the season's most difficult game, at Clemson. Terrapins fans don't want to even contemplate an 0-2 start in ACC play. Maryland has an open date Oct. 11, which means the Terrapins will either be gathering momentum for the Wake Forest game or will be stewing for two weeks. What's more, winning games against the ACC's rank and file will be the difference between a great season and a mediocre one.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
· WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, Jr., above: Heyward-Bey, whose 96 career receptions rank 12th in school history, should draw considerable NFL interest.
· DT Jeremy Navarre, Sr.: Navarre, who has the most tackles for a loss among active Maryland players, has made the move from end to tackle, added close to 15 pounds and maintained his speed.
· C Edwin Williams, Sr.: A leader on a veteran offensive line, Williams enters the season with 26 consecutive starts, the most of any offensive player.
· LB Dave Philistin, Sr.: Philistin, who is versatile enough to play any of the linebacker positions, finished fourth in the ACC in tackles last season.
· QB Josh Portis, Jr.: Coaches have guaranteed that the dual-threat third-stringer will play in specific packages because he has what offensive coordinator James Franklin calls "freakish athletic ability."
BIGGEST SHOES TO FILL
Da'Rel Scott,
Running Back
In a sense, Scott has the responsibility of filling the shoes of two departed players, Lance Ball and Keon Lattimore, who were among the most accomplished backs in school history. The quicksilver Scott has shown potential throughout camp, but he has carried the ball just 14 times in his career. Fellow sophomore Morgan Green was expected to complement Scott's speed with power, but Green has missed significant practice time because of a quadriceps injury and has fallen on the depth chart. Davin Meggett has impressed coaches and will play, but the son of former NFL standout Dave Meggett is a freshman.
