"We are focused on developing a very sound math program," said committee member Suresh Narasimhan, who has a 13-year-old son in middle school and a 9-year-old son entering fourth grade.

Narasimhan, a manager for a telecommunications software company, said he jumped at the chance to be on the committee.

"I have a history of being interested in math," he said, adding that he grew up in India, in a culture where science and math education is highly valued.

An ideal math program, he said, would emphasize rigor while teaching students to use math in more than just pragmatic ways.

Narasimhan said some people came to the committee with preconceived notions about Math Investigations but quickly realized that the committee's work was broader than that.

He said no decision had been made about whether to expand Math Investigations.

"So far, we have kept the options open," he said.
