Missy, named after the state of Mississippi from where she was rescued, is an Australian shepherd-English pointer mix with a black coat and white splotches on her belly and a three-inch white tip at her tail.
Adam Love of Fairfax adopted her from the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) shortly after Katrina hit.
"When we first got her she was very timid, but she was really sweet, still wagging her tail, but she wasn't like she is now," he says.
She had shared a home in Biloxi, Miss., with another dog and both were brought together to AWLA, which helped transport and shelter 13 dogs and three cats.
"She was from a family whose home got so devastated that they couldn't any longer have a dog," Love says.
He said she does not suffer from aftereffects of the storm, probably because she was so young when it hit.
"She's really an outdoorsy type, loves to run around," he says. "She's a really, really good dog, a really, really happy and a very likeable dog."
