Sometimes Cathy Corker's "Starlight Canoe Tours" on Lake Anna run a little long, but no one ever seems to mind.
No one's in a hurry to escape the radiant sunset or the brightening blanket of stars or the sounds of birds overhead and fish splashing to the water's surface.
"It's total nature and just beautiful," says Corker, Lake Anna State Park's chief ranger, who leads the monthly twilight excursion. Timed to correspond with the new moon (when the moon is invisible from Earth), this month's tour, the last of the season, will push off from the banks Saturday at 5 p.m.
As the excursion paddles along, Corker will offer lessons on the lake's ecology and the 2,800-acre park's history. Once the sun begins to descend, the group will disembark on a remote patch of land that offers what some local guides refer to as "The Sound of Music Vista."
"It's this pristine meadow overlooking the lake," Corker says. "It is absolutely the most breathtaking panoramic views you can have." (Hint, hint: Pack the camera.)
Back in the canoes, the group will head to a quiet cove to watch the sun sink into the horizon.
"It's an opportunity for folks to really stop and appreciate. That's the fun of this job: picking those moments," Cocker explains. "We're all so busy in our lives we can miss them. But here we've got an opportunity to take that moment and really appreciate it."
