D.C. United's Jaime Moreno and Ivan Guerrero have been recalled by their respective national teams to play in World Cup qualifiers, forcing them to miss a MLS regular season match but not a tournament championship game.
Moreno, the team captain and starting forward, and Guerrero, the starting left-side midfielder, will be available for United's U.S. Open Cup final against the second-division Charleston Battery on Wednesday at RFK Stadium. They will then rejoin their national teams -- Moreno with Bolivia, Guerrero with Honduras -- for qualifiers on Sept. 6 and 10; United has a Sept. 6 game at San Jose.
Bolivia will play at Ecuador and Brazil. Honduras will face Canada in Montreal and host Jamaica.
United worked to ensure that the pair would be able to play in the Open Cup final, the club's first title game in any competition since 2004. The winner will earn an automatic berth in an international competition next year.
Moreno, 34, played for Bolivia in a 3-0 exhibition loss to Guatemala at RFK Stadium three weeks ago. Guerrero was a second-half substitute during Honduras's 2-1 qualifying loss at Mexico last week.
Meantime, U.S. Coach Bob Bradley has named a 20-man roster for upcoming qualifiers against Cuba in Havana and Trinidad and Tobago in Bridgeview, Ill. The list includes 16 players from last week's squad that defeated Guatemala, 1-0. The additions were defenders Danny Califf, Michael Orozco and Marvell Wynne and midfielder Ricardo Clark. . . .
Tickets for the second game between the United States and Cuba, Oct. 11 in Washington, will go on sale next Thursday, the U.S. Soccer Federation announced. Prices range from $28 to $95.
