Records: Season openers

This Story

When: 3:45 p.m.

Where: Byrd Stadium

TV: ESPN

Radio: WWXT (92.7 FM), WWXX (94.3 FM), WXTR (730 AM), WTEM (980 AM).

IN A RUSH: Coach Ralph Friedgen has been concerned about his running game. The Terrapins have speed with sophomore Da'Rel Scott and freshman Davin Meggett, but they lack experience. A veteran line will help, but it remains to be seen whether Maryland can adequately fill the void left by Lance Ball and Keon Lattimore.

AT THE HELM: This is the first true look at offensive coordinator James Franklin's version of the West Coast offense. Starting quarterback Jordan Steffy feels he is a perfect fit for the offense because it relies on short, precise passes. How will third-stringer Josh Portis figure into the mix in specific packages?

STOPGAP MEASURES: Friedgen is interested in how his defense looks in a 3-3-5 base. The Terrapins are deep at linebacker but not on the defensive line. Cornerbacks' tackling was an issue last season, but the secondary has played well in camp.

WIDER EXPOSURE: The game was moved to ESPN, when the LSU-Appalachian State scheduled for that time slot was moved earlier to avoid Hurricane Gustav.
