PERSONNEL DEPT.
The Nationals removed two relief pitchers, Chris Schroder and Brian Sanches, from their 40-man roster yesterday in order to clear space for September call-ups. Both Schroder, 30, and Sanches, 30, currently with Class AAA Columbus, had big league stints this season. Sanches appeared in 12 games (7.36 ERA) and Schroder, who also pitched for Washington in 2006 and 2007, appeared in four games (5.40 ERA). Both pitchers will remain with Columbus.

QUOTABLE
"I am chasing a lot of pitches. Sometimes you feel good and you want to swing, but I am swinging at bad pitches. It's hard. I have to make the adjustment."
C Jesús Flores, batting .189 in August
