On Sept. 1, we had about a two-hour floor session, which was primarily procedural. After officially opening the convention and electing officers, a main action was the reports of the committees on various policy and party organization issues. One very significant item for the District was the issue of D.C. voting rights.

Our D.C. GOP made this the No. 1 issue in our local party platform, specifically supporting Rep. Tom Davis's bill. We also tried to introduce this plank into the national platform. Robert McFarlane, former national security adviser, fought hard in the national platform committee deliberations, but there was very little support among other state committee representatives, and voting rights for the District was dropped from the national platform.

Another disappointment for an old battle.

Although the floor activities went well, the main impression many of us delegates have is that a lot of the logistics are not going well. There were major traffic delays on the first day, and the wait to get through security into the Xcel Energy Center was long.

There are hundreds of friendly and well-meaning local volunteers all over the city, but few seem to be able to answer such basic questions as giving directions to major destinations or activities. It has been frustrating.

It was such a humbling experience to walk into the convention hall. The energy from the delegates, media, guests and staff was hard to describe. The best way to describe it is when you go see your favorite band or singing group and you walk into the arena and there is the stage. You try to pass the time, but the only thing that you have on your mind is "When is it going to start!?"

Well, the anticipation paid off, and it began. The business of the day was to nominate the candidates and to ratify the platform, as well as other administrative items, which we did unanimously.

Then, the best part came. As we were sitting there, the chairman walked off the stage without introducing anyone, and I thought that it might be over. But then, an announcer came on and introduced Laura Bush! It was awesome.
